Lowry Creative Writing Competition

The Lowry Theatre is hosting a creative writing competition for children aged 8-11 in Salford and Greater Manchester.

The aim of this competition is to encourage younger children to pursue creative writing, and help them become more confident in the process.

Prizes include the chance to perform the winning piece on the Quay’s Theatre stage at the prize giving event, up to £50 in book tokens, a professional illustration and tickets to a Lowry show for friends and family of the winners.

All forms of writing are allowed, including poetry, spoken word, creative writing and scriptwriting. However, the aim is to focus primarily on performance writing, as the winner will get the chance to have their piece performed at The Lowry. This can be either by the author themselves or someone else on their behalf.

The panel of judges includes performance writer Emma Rogerson, playwright Simon Stephens, poet Tony Walsh, children’s author Frank Cottrell-Boyce and actress and children’s writer, Samantha Giles, best known for her role in Emmerdale.

Ms Giles said: “I’m looking for uninhibited imagination…what sort of world would you like to step into?”

The actress also said that she does not want those entering to worry too much about grammar. She followed: “It’s more for me, the ideas, the magical worlds that they can set up.

“Really letting your imagination run wild.”

Alongside the challenge there will be funding to local primary schools in Salford. This will allow five targeted schools to receive a support package which will include a workshop in creative writing hosted by a professional artist.

The competition closes on Friday at midday with the prize-giving event being held on Wednesday 7th of December.

More information on the competition is available here.
