The Working Class Movement Library (WCML) have set up a range of activities to celebrate Engels Week.

The week will include a performance evening with musicians, Johnny Campbell and Joe Solo; scheduled walks led by Dr. Morag Rose; and an Engels-themed Printmaking Workshops hosted by artist, Lucy Morris.

The week sets out to celebrate the work of the philosopher and political critic, Frederich Engels, who explored the sociopolitical climate of Salford and Manchester throughout the 1800s. He also worked with Philosopher, Karl Marx, to create the Communist Manifesto.

Born in Germany, Fredrich Engels wrote the influential book ‘The Conditions of the Working Class in England’ (1845), after observing the environment of Manchester and Salford slums.

The week hopes to share the importance of Engels’ work and his impact on modern life in Salford and Manchester.

Belinda Scarlett, Library manager said: “Salford has an important and fascinating link with Friedrich Engels and his philosophy.

“As we face on-going struggles against inequality and increasing pressure on living and working conditions, The Working Class Movement Library will bring the work of Engels alive and explore his relevance today through a season of creative events to celebrate his links to Salford.”

The series of events will begin on the 24th of November until the 10th of December. Visit the Working Class Movement Library website for more information.
