An Irlam-based organisation is giving men the chance to talk about their mental health through weekly meetings.

Irlam’s Lads Den, which is based at the Hamilton Davies Trust, is open to any man who feels like they want to talk about their mental health.

One attendee from Broughton, who chose to remain anonymous, said: “I’ve been in a toxic relationship over the last year and I came here to help my mental health get better.

“I know one of the people who runs this group through the Young Father’s Partnership, he’s been working with me for a year and he was encouraging me to come here.

“I feel more open about my mental health but I don’t really talk about it.”

Men from their teens to their 50s gather at the group, which meets every Tuesday. It was set up by the Jamie Horrocks Trust, in association with the Salford Youth Service, back in September 2020.

Despite the issues that are discussed at the Lads Den, it’s an informal session where men are encouraged to share their thoughts, but they are under no pressure.

The sessions are led by youth workers from the Salford Youth Service and it is split into two sections, a ‘tea and talk’ session, and a discussion around a theme.

Another attendee, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: “There’s this helper here called Sid, he’s good with speaking to people of all ages and he helps with things. He’s a social guy and he makes you want to speak more.”

Sid is one of three helpers at the Lads Den and they are the heart of the group, leading the session and giving support to those who need it.

Tom Cole, one of the helpers at the Lads Den, said: “I like the fact that lots of men come from different walks of life. I also like the mutual support they offer each other.

“I find it rewarding that men come back and seem to enjoy the space while being comfortable talking about their mental health.”

The Lads Den meet at six o’clock every Tuesday and is open to men of all ages.
