A new programme called Thrifty Plates is offering Salford residents the opportunity to learn how to use a slow cooker, in a bid to tackle the cost of living crisis.

Thrifty Plates, set up by Salford City Council, is a four-week programme, in which attendees learn the benefits of using a slow cooker, which participants get to take home and use from week two.

The programme aims to support communities all across Salford to help keep their fuel and food costs down, working closely with Salix Homes, For Housing and Together Housing, The Health Improvement Service (HIS) was able to identify the most vulnerable families and enrol them into the programme.

Reene Salter, 48, who is spearheading the scheme, said: “My hope is that it impacts the clients positively and takes away any uncertainty on how to use a slow cooker, what they can cook in it and where to use is to help lower their food and fuel cost. I am hoping it reduces the worry all the clients are feeling due to the cost of living crisis.

“It is so cheap to run, 7p an hour with the model they are receiving. It means you shouldn’t need to worry if you are leaving it on for 8hrs to cook a stew or casserole.

“You can buy cheaper cuts of meat using a slow cooker as the slow cooker breaks the meat down to be very tender because of the length of cooking.”

The programme is running until March with capacity for 200 families at the council’s Gateway centres.
