The headliner of a Salford-based poetry evening has launched a poetry collection.

Poet and Salford University graduate Will Stevenson was top of the bill at Verbose Manchester, hosted at the The Kings Arms last week.

The event, billed as a showcase for spoken word and live literature, host regular spoken word events at the Salford pub, which hosts open mic acts every last Monday of every month.

Will says Verbose always has a supportive audience.

“There’s a large lovely and supportive crowd with good beer at the bar. One thing you should look forward to is the clicking, instead of clapping we click to show our appreciation and participation.”

The lyricist often covers topics of ‘political diatribe, space, time, travel and train transport’ in his poetry collection and during his open mic acts.

Will said: “The idea of walking down the street and coming across all these people with their own stories and their own connections is so fascinating to me.

“Like the potential and idea of a train, going anywhere, meeting anyone is amazing. It leaves me feeling positive at the wide range of opportunity.”

Will’s poetry collection carries the theme of every single day being a ‘new opportunity’ where anything can be created.

He also covers themes of importance, such as the class system, in his writing. Having come from Lincolnshire, he often felt the ‘unfairness’ of society at seeing some of his friends ‘being more or less impoverished.’

This led him to ‘find his voice’ as he realised that change would only come when he made a difference in his day-to-day life.

After explaining the main topics his poetry covered, William said: “I feel as though I’m making it sound very brooding, but it is funny. I think good poetry should make you laugh.”

William Stevenson will also be holding more poetry nights with his partner Michaela, Switchblade Society, that will be starting during this month of February soon.

Upcoming writers can join in open mic acts, poetry readings and much more.

“It leaves me feeling positive at the wide range of opportunity,” said Will.

Will’s book can be purchased from Bent Key Publishing. To find more events held by Verbose you can click here and to find upcoming events held by Will click here to find out the details.
