Red devils women po0st match (Salford Red devils twitter)

Salford Red Devils ladies team recorded a victory in their fist ever Super League 2 game in a 8-20 win.

Luci Mckeown got the Devils off to a flying start when she scored the first try after just two minutes following some good work from Victoria Kini. Mckeown failed to convert the resulting penalty, however the team continued to kick on, scoring their second try on the 10 minute mark, Helena Walker this time getting the ball over the line.

Castleford replied with a try of their own to make it 4-8 to Salford, but Alex Simpson soon replied to re-establish a more comfortable lead.

And a Taz Corcoran try on top of this saw the Red Devils go in to the interval with a 4-16 lead.

The second half was a lot more about digging in for the Devils than try’s, aiming to get the win over the line.

Castleford scored a try early to up the pressure, but a big tackle from Mckeown saw Salford hold their own.

On 67 minutes Steph Gray scored a huge try to extend Salford’s lead to 8-20 with just 13 minutes to go.

As the clock was ticking closer to the end, it was all about remaining defensively solid and gaining as much territory as possible.

A high kick from Luci Mckeown relieving a lot of the pressure on for the Red Devils with three minutes to play.

They were able to leave with their twelve point lead despite their standards slipping in the second half and being under a lot of defensive pressure.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach, Chris Bates said: “They’ve worked so hard for so long. This is a different stage for us.

“We really needed those [experienced] players step up today. I’ll be really interested to see if people thought we’d come here and win, but here we are.”

They will travel to next week’s Women’s Challenge Cup tie against Featherstone Rovers.
