Planning permission has finally been approved for a new Lidl in Salford’s Castle Irwell scheme after an almost three-year-battle.

The proposals to build the site on the corner of Cromwell Road and Littleton Road were approved by Salford City Council last week (December 8).

The decision comes after their first planning application was rejected by the council in the summer of 2021, as the council determined that the 23,300 sq ft store would be too large.

The council then submitted an updated proposal in January 2023. After this, the council approved the second proposal which suggested a scheme for a smaller Lidl store, measuring 20,000 sq ft.

Lidl’s new development plan has further moved the store closer to Littleton Road and moved the access point for vehicles to Cromwell Road.

The store will open out onto a car park with 100 spaces, including six disabled, nine parent and child and two electric vehicle charging points in addition to five motorbike parking bays.

The council has stated that the site development must commence no later than three years beginning with the date the permission was granted (December 8).

The site’s full address is on Cromwell Road, Castle Irwell, Salford, M6 6DA.
