Neil Wood post Colu (Salford City youtube)

Neil Wood cut an agitated figure in his post-match debrief following last night’s 2-1 defeat to Colchester United.

Wood was particularly disappointed with his defence as his side conceded two poor goals on the night.

“There’s not really an excuse for them, I’d love to try and find an excuse for it but [they’re] really poor goals to give away. That’s the bottom line of it, you shouldn’t give goals away like that.”

Wood believes that Salford had good control of the game for much of the 90 and was frustrated to concede to Colchester’s “first real chance of the half” when Joe Taylor scored on 42 minutes.

“The good thing is that there is another game coming, the games are coming thick and fast, it’s a great period for the fans and us ourselves, especially after the disappointment tonight to get back out on the pitch and find a way of winning.”

Theo Vassell was absent from Salford’s squad in their defeat, with Wood admitting the defender still needs assessing having picked up a knock on his ankle against AFC Wimbledon.

The Salford Head Coach praised his side’s travelling support, with 114 Ammies making the 9-hour round trip from Salford down to Essex:

“I thought it was an amazing turnout when we turned up and there were fans there behind the goal. It’s a long way! Especially in this period, at Christmas time.

“We appreciate that and we’re as disappointed as they are. We felt we did enough to win the game but we definitely appreciate their support, travelling so far to give their backing to the lads.”

Salford have the chance to atone for their loss on Boxing Day when they will host Tranmere Rovers.
