Goalkeeper Alex Cairns said that his side’s performance was “not good enough at all” as Salford City fell to a devastating loss against Tranmere Rovers.

The Ammies were thoroughly beaten 1-5 at the Peninsula Stadium by the Birkenhead side, who had not won an away game since February.

Going 3-0 down by the 50th minute, Neil Wood’s men looked lost at sea before a Kelly Nmai goal gave a glimmer of hope to the home faithful.

But Rovers quickly responded to dash any chances of a comeback, with Conor McAleny being sent off for a second bookable adding salt to the wounds.

The loss put Salford in 21st place in League Two, and was ultimately the final straw for Salford City, with Wood being dismissed by the club on Wednesday morning.

Speaking following the loss, Cairns did not hold back his frustrations, saying: “It’s not great at all. I don’t think any of us expected that result to happen. It’s not even tough to take, just not good enough at all, all over the pitch or anywhere.

“We just need to bounce back with a lot better performance that that and people need to start standing up and putting their chest out, start putting performances in.

“Fans pay their hard earned money to come and watch the lads, especially on Boxing Day with the Christmas festivities, everyone wants a good performance, everyone wants to be excited, and that’s just not good enough from every single one of us.

“As a group we have to be accountable for that performance, we’re the ones out on that pitch and even if we’re not playing well we have to stand up and be counted, win our individual battles, and be together on the pitch, and we weren’t that.”

Salford will face Grimsby on the 29th of December, with assistant coach Simon Wiles taking charge for the game at Moor Lane.
