Salford City were roundly beaten 5-1 by fellow League Two strugglers Tranmere Rovers at home on Boxing Day.

The Ammies came into the day winless at home since the 7th of October, whilst the Birkenhead club had not won on the road since February.

An under pressure Neil Wood named three changes to the side that lost to Colchester United on Friday, including a start for leading goal scorer Matt Smith following a knock.

Salford started well at the Peninsula Stadium, with Matty Lund flicking a looping header wide of Luke McGee’s goal.

It was Rovers who struck first, however, with Harvey Saunders’ effort slotting neatly into Alex Cairns’ net.

Salford looked to get an equaliser, with the game becoming more end to end, with Conor McAleny’s long range effort being claimed.

Nigel Adkins’ side doubled their advantage through Keiron Morris, his shot from deep in the left side of the box nestling into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The game quietened going into the half, with the Ammies deservedly 2-0 down at the break.

Tranmere seemingly put the game to bed five minutes after the restart, with leading man Connor Jennings adding his name to the scoresheet.

Lund stepped up and put Salford back in with a shout, his effort from inside the D being unsavable for the Rovers’ keeper.

Any doubt that may have been sown by the midfielder’s strike were quickly wiped away when Regan Hendry scored his side’s fourth of the game in the 64th minute.

Things went from bad to worse when Conor McAleny was dismissed by Ben Toner for a second yellow card for a bad foul.

Tranmere’s rout on the road was completed in injury time, with subsitute Josh Hawkes capping off a strong performance for his side.

Salford now sit in 20th place, six points above the relegation spots ahead of their clash against Grimsby on December 29th.
