On national pie day, we found the creator of ‘The Salford Pie’ and asked him about his baked delicacies.

The Leaf Bean Pod Cafe, Eccles

The Leaf Bean Pod Café house their very own selection of pies each with a unique spin, crafted by manager and owner, David.

Some of the pies on the menu include a Moroccan beef pie, a cheese and onion pie and a steak and ale pie. Yet there were some that stood out from all the rest; ‘The Salford pie’, ‘The Salford red pie’ and ‘The Eccles pie.’ It was clear just how popular these pies were, as upon arrival ‘The Eccles Pie’ was already sold out and the other stocks of both ‘Salford’ pies seemed to be likewise in high demand.

'The Salford Pie'

It became evident just why stocks were so low after trying the Salford red pie. The pie itself was coated in a golden, crispy pastry which managed to perfectly hold the hearty corned beef hash that was sprinkled with red cabbage (hence the name). The Salford pie was also just as good, and held an almost nostalgic feel in its taste to cold winter nights and a family dinner. Utilizing a traditional dish of corned beef hash, it is clear why many locals visit this café, not only just for its welcoming atmosphere but also for the food.

The flavour did not stop at the pies however, as the cafes owner David brought a sense of charismatic appeal which made the whole café deliciously vibrant. The café’s experimental approach began just under four years ago, when David created his very own ‘Vindaloo Pies’, when asked about about these David stated:

“I sold them all within half an hour!”

After which he realised, “There’s something here”.

David then created the iconic ‘Salford Pie’ after being suggested to by the likes of Salford greats; Tony Flynn (local history editor and senior reporter of Salford Online) as well as Fred Fielder (Radio presenter), who had both tried some of David’s pies. This idea didn’t just stop there, as with his creative approach he managed to further create ‘The Eccles Pie’.

This pie is by far David’s most popular and actually makes him go through around 30 pounds of bacon per week. Some of the pie’s ingredients are bacon, cabbage, mustard and mashed potato and the flavours obviously work extremely well as they often sell out like hot cakes (or pies).

As well as pies, The Leaf Bean Pod Café also holds themed nights, accompanied with a set menu every month. Some of these theme nights have reflected Manchester and it’s culture such as a ‘Mad-chester’ themed night, as well as an up and coming evening themed around ‘Fac-51’ records.

There are also some other events taking place such as ‘A Manchester legendary pub 31 years past’ which is commemorating a pub called ‘Tommy Ducks’, which got knocked down 31 years ago.
