Salford’s annual duck race will take place on Good Friday to raise money for life-changing medical equipment for vulnerable children and babies.

Families from across Salford are set to descend on Salford Quays to see hundreds of yellow rubber ducks make their way along one of the ship canal basins in a hotly contested race for charity.

Firemen from the Salford Fire Brigade will use a jet hose to send the ducks racing down the course in front of crowds of cheering spectators.

Members of the public can get involved by sponsoring a duck with prizes such as tickets for Go Karting, Laser Quest and vouchers for the indoor activity park Oxygen Activeplay up for grabs if you back the fastest swimmer.

The annual duck race will bring together local businesses, schools and families for a fun day at Salford Quays in support of MedEquip4Kids – a charity that raises money for neonatal and paediatric medical equipment, sensory facilities in hospitals, specialised equipment for disabled children and mental health resources.

There will be a host of fairground rides, food stalls and live entertainment to enjoy on the day, as well as the duck race.

The showpiece duck race starts at 3pm, but entertainment will be open from 12:30.

Christine Cornock, Trust and corporate fundraiser, said: “All funds raised through duck sales will support vulnerable children and babies across Greater Manchester and beyond.

“MedEquip4Kids provides vital medical equipment that the NHS cannot fund, including sensory and play facilities in hospitals, neonatal incubators, specialised equipment for disabled children and mental health resources for CAMHS services.”

Christine added: “With around 1,000 people expected to attend, the Easter duck race promises a wonderful afternoon of community spirit, laughter and giving back.”
