Manchester Swinton Lionesses RLFC return to competitive action this Sunday, defending the Women’s Challenge Shield against Stanningley Ladies.

Formed in 2020, the Lionesses have rapidly grown into one of the rising sides in the Women’s Rugby League, where they enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025.

The team lifted the Challenge Shield to mark the first major honour in the team’s history last season when they beat Salford Red Devils Women 12-4 in the final.

Their journey included strong performances against Leigh Miners Rangers, Widnes Vikings, and Hull KR and reflected the squad’s attacking quality as well as their confidence and team spirit.

They were able to form a standout season, adding their first Pankhurst Cup and a Women’s Nines semi-final appearance alongside their Challenge Shield success.

Now, attention turns to a new challenge of defending their triumph. Entering this weekend’s competition as reigning champions brings added expectation, but the Lionesses will remain determined and optimistic, aiming to build on what they achieved last season.

The growth of the Lionesses reflects the wider progress of the club as a whole, with Swinton Lions RLFC continuing its commitment to developing the women’s game and creating pathways for players within the community. Since the team’s formation, they have been able to secure support both locally and across the rugby league community.

Supporters are once again encouraged to get behind the team at Ince Rose Bridge Sports and Community Club, where building a positive match-day atmosphere will drive the team forward.

With a new season beginning and the continued support from the Swinton community, the Lionesses will be looking to kick off their title defence with a strong appearance and carry that momentum into another exciting season.

Manchester Swinton Lionesses will take on Stanningley Ladies on Sunday 29 March, 2pm kick-off at Ince Rose Bridge Sports and Community Club.
