A primary school football team from Worsley have been crowned champions of a special tournament in the city’s centenary year.
Days after Salford City players and supporters celebrated the club clinching its place in the League Two play-off final on the Peninsula Stadium pitch, 15 schools from across the city competed for the Centenary Cup at The Ammies’ home ground on Monday.
St Mark’s CE Primary School were crowned champions following an impressive tournament performance.
The team of smiling schoolkids in their blue and black striped kits hoisted the Centenary Cup high above their heads in celebration after beating Mesne Lea Primary School in the final.
The tournament was organised by Foundation 92, Salford City FC’s dedicated charity.
They offered “huge congratulations” to St Mark’s on their achievement and praised runners-up Mesne Lea Primary School for their “brilliant tournament.”
A spokesperson for the charity added: “The tournament provided young players with the opportunity to experience football in a professional stadium environment, while celebrating teamwork, sportsmanship and participation alongside schools from across the city.”
“Events such as the Salford Schools Centenary Cup continue to play an important role in bringing schools together through sport and creating memorable experiences for young people in the local community.
“Foundation 92 hopes everybody involved enjoyed their day at the Peninsula Stadium and would like to thank all participating schools, staff and supporters for contributing to a successful event.”
