A Salford MP has welcomed the government’s move to postpone a planned increase in fuel duty this year.

Worsley and Eccles MP Michael Wheeler celebrated the Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to scrap plans to increase fuel duty by 5p a litre from September.

The government said the move will save the average motorist over £120.

He also applauded the introduction of other measures introduced in response to growing concerns about the impact the Iran war is having on the cost of living.

A package, worth more than £400 million, includes tax breaks for hauliers and help with red diesel costs for farmers.

The price rate of tax on red diesel will be lowered from just above 10p to 6.48p per litre until the end of the year, starting on 15 June.

Michael Wheeler MP said: “I know that rising fuel prices cause real pressure for families, commuters and local businesses here in Worsley & Eccles.

“Whether it is getting to work, running a small business or keeping goods moving across the country, these costs are felt in everyday life. That is why I welcome this package of support from the Government at a time of global uncertainty.”

A 12-month holiday on vehicle excise duty for Heavy Goods Vehicles has also been announced.

Michael Wheeler MP added: “While no single measure can fully insulate us from global instability, this package will make a real difference to households and businesses across our community.

“I will continue to stand up for local residents and small businesses in Worsley & Eccles, and ensure their voices are heard as the Government responds to ongoing pressures on the cost of living.”
