A forward-thinking Salford firefighter has developed an innovative underwater drone to save lives in open water emergencies.

Fireman Dave Allsey and his watch from Salford Community Fire Station have engineered an underwater drone which will help crews locate people more quickly during water emergencies.

Equipped with advanced sonar and imaging systems, the Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (UROV) can operate at depths of up to 300 metres.

This technology will help crews locate people underwater more quickly and reduce the need for firefighters to enter the water in the early stages of an incident.

“This project started from wanting to find a safer and more effective way to support crews during difficult and time-critical water incidents,” firefighter Allsey said of his invention.

“Over the last four years, we’ve worked closely across the Service to develop equipment that can make a real difference when every second counts. It’s incredibly rewarding to now see the UROV operational in Salford and supporting our firefighters and communities.”

A new underwater drone has been created by a Salford firefighter.

His potential life-saving technology has been introduced as Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service continues its campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of open water.

The firefighter’s breakthrough comes after GMFRS attended 66 fatal water incidents in the last five years. Some of these tragedies involved people who got into difficulty after jumping into or swimming in open water.

The fire brigade is running a water safety campaign that reminds people about the dangers of jumping into open water.
“Even on warm days, cold water shock can quickly overwhelm the body, while hidden hazards beneath the surface can place people in danger within seconds,” a force spokesperson outlined.

The UROV is designed for use in calm or gently moving water where currents are below 3mph. In Greater Manchester, it can be used in places such as Salford Quays and canals running through Manchester city centre.

It is operated by two specially trained firefighters and supported by two water rescue firefighters wearing full protective equipment.

“This new technology strengthens our ability to respond to incidents and supports our wider work to prevent accidental drownings. As we head into the warmer months, we want everyone to understand the risks associated with open water and know what to do in an emergency.”

Chief Fire Officer Dave Russell said: “This is a fantastic example of innovation coming directly from within our Service and demonstrates the skill, creativity and dedication of our firefighters and support teams.

“The introduction of the UROV significantly enhances our capability to respond to water incidents and has the potential to improve outcomes for people in difficulty beneath the water’s surface.

“I’m extremely proud of everyone involved in bringing this pioneering equipment into operational use. It reflects our continued commitment to improving firefighter and public safety through innovation, learning and investment.”
