THE University of Salford rowing team complete their first race of the season.

Seven different crews including Manchester, Chester, and fastest in the North, Agecroft came to show what they were made of.

The University of Salford entered four events for the 3 kilometre distance this included a Men’s single, Mens intermediate four, Mens novice eight and a womens eight.

Salford’s intermediate four took great direction from their cox allowing them to place 5th. The team collapsed at the finish after giving it their all.  Men’s captain, Tom Burns had this to say before his race:

In division one, Rich Matthewson secured 2nd place in the men’s single finishing in a time of 12 minutes and 47 seconds. Up against rowers from the fastest club in the North, Rich pushed through for a time close to his personal best giving him confidence going into the rest of the season.

He said: “I was up against two boys that were bigger and stronger, I started hard and pushed on the legs in the hope of catching up to one of them but it didn’t happen so I just tried to keep the pace going”

The women’s eight had a rocky start with it being the first time they raced together as a full crew, however after the first kilometre they found their rhythm helping them to finish in a time of 15 minutes 44 seconds.

The team are in good spirits going into the racing season with plenty to work on for their competition coming up on the 28th October.
