Salford train drivers, postal workers, firefighters, nurses, and lecturers are all set to strike before the end of the year causing widespread disruption.

The strikes have been caused by the lack of wage increases due to inflation, which sits at the highest level in 41 years at 10.1%, according to figures from the Bank of England.

The Communication Workers Union, which Royal Mail workers support, have proposed 11 days of strike action (including Christmas Eve) which could cause chaos in the run up the Christmas, especially those ordering last minute presents.

A Spokesperson for the CWU said: “The determination of these people hasn’t swayed, they won’t accept their living standards being smashed.”

The first of their planned strikes will take place on 24th November.

The Fire Brigades Union have recently rejected a proposed 5% pay increase, meaning a strike ballot will be held between 5th December 2022 and 23rd January 2023.

Mark Wrack, the General Secretary of the FBU said: “The ball is in the employers’ and government’s court. There is still an opportunity to resolve this dispute.”

The Royal College of Nurses Union, which has never had a strike in its 106-year history said: “Anger has become action – our members are saying enough is enough. The voice of nursing in the UK is strong and I will make sure it is heard.”

They are expected to strike before Christmas.

Pat Cullen, the general secretary of the RCN said: “Our members will no longer tolerate a financial knife edge at home and a raw deal at work.”

The union have assured that during any industrial strike action they will minimise the impact on patients and there would be minimum risk to patient safety.

The Universities and College Union are set to see 70,000 members striking in one of their largest strikes yet.

They plan to strike on the 24th, 25th and 30th November.

A Spokesperson for the Union said: “UCU members do not want to strike but are doing so to save the sector and win dignity at work

“If university vice – chancellors don’t get serious, our message is simple – this bout of strike action will just be the beginning”

Although the Royal Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers have no planned strikes, members of ASLEF will strike on the 26th of November.
