One year ago this week, an ex-air force officer was handed the keys to Salford Veterans Cafe. Now, after a closure and re-opening, what’s next for the community cafe, and what opportunities does the reopening bring to Salfordians?

Carl Blower, an ex air force officer of 20 years and retired policeman, first got the keys to the 1940s style café one year ago this week on March 7th 2022. Located in Eccles Shopping centre, the community cafe is targeted at ex officers of any age – along with their families.

The cafe works to support ex-veterans struggling with mental health issues, such as PTSD and mental breakdowns.

Carl plans to renovate the upstairs of his café to accommodate activities that will help ease these conditions. His plan is to divide the upstairs into rooms for massages and therapy.. He is also in the process of installing computers and printers for his customers to use.

Carl, who runs the establishment with the help of his volunteers, is also wanting to buy the building next door. The plan is to “host arts and crafts to help deal with things such as PTSD.” He would like to open the invitation to all to “bring the community together.”

The charity, which is heavily reliant on its funding and its volunteers, are also in need of tables and chairs.

Carl explained: “I do have a JustGiving for anyone willing to donate as we are a non profit organisation.

“Cadent Gas donated to my go fund me and actually purchased the coffee machine.”

Carl also expressed his excitement for Armed Forces Day, with plans to decorate the outside of the premises.

Anyone wanting to donate can do so here and more information on the Veterans café can be found on Facebook.
