A suspected gas leak at Eccles Morrisons has caused excessive disruption, with access to the leisure centre and schools affected.

Two fire engines attended the suspected leak from the petrol station this morning (Wednesday 26 April) just after 6.30am. Crews were in attendance for more than two hours.

Bentcliffe Way and the superstore’s car park were reportedly closed, with access to Eccles Leisure Centre hindered.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 6.30am this morning (Wednesday 26 April) we were called to a petrol station at Irwell Place, Eccles, in response to reports of a suspected gas leak.

“Two fire engines from Salford and Eccles fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene. Firefighters worked alongside colleagues from Cadent to isolate equipment on the site and ensure the area was safe.

“Crews were in attendance for just over two hours before handing over to site management.”

Residents have been sharing images of the situation online, with St Andrews primary school urging families to take alternative routes.
