An eight-year-old boy from Irlam has signed to Liverpool FC’s Under 9s.

Eight-year-old Jayden Sargeant was officially signed in May after playing for Irlam Vale since he was four years old.

The defender later played in tournaments for Parkwyydn Juniors. Following his initial debut for the Eccles team, Jayden was scouted for both Manchester City and United. Subsequent matches also led to approaches from Everton and Liverpool.

Jayden’s mum, Lucillie Sergeant, 43, spoke proudly of Jayden’s hard work and dedication. She said: “He was training every single night. He used to have a Tuesday night off because he would go between Manchester United, City and Liverpool.

“Then he would have a game on a Saturday and Sunday. He still used to ask his dad if he could play at Parkwyydn on a Tuesday though.”

At first, there was uncertainty surrounding Jayden’s opportunity to be signed to Liverpool. Lucille added: “Originally, they said they had already got the team they wanted. But then Jayden said he wanted to go and play the last match and he was phenomenal.

“He did a top bin for his free kick which was amazing. They then rang and said that they’d made a big mistake and would he sign for them.”

A slightly divided household, Jayden’s dad Glen, 48, and grandad support Liverpool, after having come from the city. However, the rest of the family are Manchester United fans. Nonetheless, Lucille said how they were “super proud” and “Mummy cried” upon hearing the news, before turning to Jayden and fussing.

Jayden’s older brother Junior, 15, has previously signed to Bolton FC.

Jayden has already made plenty of friends at Liverpool and has loved being there so far. With dreams of playing football professionally in the future, he said he would like to buy a big house one day.

“He said he’d have his mum as the cleaner,” Lucille said with laughter.

Jayden will turn nine in October but will remain with Liverpool until September 2024. “Fingers crossed, if he keeps progressing the way he has he’ll be there for the foreseeable,” Lucille said.
