Salford Red Devils has announced that winger/centre Matty Costello has left the club upon the expiry of his contract.

The 25-year-old joined the club in December 2020, after winning back to back Super League Grand Finals with St. Helens.

He made 26 Super League appearances during his time at Saints, where he was able to scoring six tries earning an appearance in a 20-12 defeat to Sydney Roosters during the World Club Challenge.

Costello joined Salford on a three-year-deal, where he was able to cross the line 12 times for the Red Devils 12 times in just 24 games. He was able to play a role in the side’s 7th place finish in 2023, filling in for an injured Tim Lafai being used as both a centre and a winger.

The versatile player was also able to enjoy loan spells at both Newcastle Thunder and Barrow Raiders.

Costello will be returning to RFL Championship side Barrow Raiders, where he spent some time on loan. He aims to replicate the impact he had throughout his time scoring four tries in his six games with the club.

In an interview with his new club, he stated: “I’m excited to have the pressure of not just playing for the Raiders, but the whole town.”

He managed three tries in nine appearances over the season.

Salford will now look to find a replacement for Costello, to improve their squad’s depth for next term.
