Chapel Street’s transformation is set to be celebrated in style on Saturday 19 September with a free family-friendly event.
The action-packed festival ‘Make Tracks’ will be on from 13:00-20:00 on Saturday, and Salford residents are invited to see the area’s accessibility improvements, while joining in with family fun at iconic surrounding venues.
Salford City Council and Sounds From The Other City producers, From The Other, are excited to announce the event, following its success in Walkden in 2024.
The event will be a celebration of the completion of the Chapel Street East and New Bailey Scheme. The area has been transformed into an accessible and connected neighbourhood.
Not only has this made pedestrians a priority, but it has still maintained the capacity for buses and general traffic.
Some of its most recognisable improvements are; Segregated cycle tracks, continuous footways, new planting, seating, as well as sustainable drainage systems.
With a now better connected New Bailey, Greengate, Trinity and Irwell Riverside along with the city centre, there is reassuring support towards the long-term regeneration of the area.
Salford City Council’s Deputy City Mayor, Mike McCusker and Lead Member for Planning, Transport, Sustainable Development and Regeneration, says the investment into high-quality public spaces and improved routes is creating an environment to make the area a better place to live and work.
“We are delighted to host this exciting community event, bringing people together for a day of entertainment and activities while showcasing the positive changes taking place across the area”, he said.
He added: “It is also a fantastic opportunity to highlight the benefits of sustainable travel and demonstrate how these improvements are helping to build a greener, healthier future for Salford and beyond.”
There will be a variety of events throughout the afternoon, such as;
- Test out cargo bikes and accessible cycles from Manchester Bikes.
- Group bike ride along the new route with Bee Pedal Ready.
- Guided walk uncovering the stories behind Sacred Trinity, Bexley Square and New Bailey with local historian, Jonathan Schofield (for a small donation).
- Fitness workshops from Bhangrancise and Red Rodeo Club.
- A puppy portrait of your furry friend from professional PhoDOGrapher
Georgie Edwards, spokesperson of From The Other, said: “Chapel Street has always had its own character, with culture and creativity flowing between Salford and Manchester. We’re celebrating that with brilliant local music, dance and art, alongside loads of playful ways to get moving.”
Richard Nickson, Active Travel Network Director at Transport For Greater Manchester, is hoping the newest Bee Network route will make residents’ lives easier.
“We’re always working to add new high-quality active travel routes to the Bee Network, and we hope this latest addition will encourage more people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for their everyday journeys”, he added.
