Neil Wood post Newport County (Salford City youtube)

Manager Neil Wood has urged his side to ensure they continue to push hard for results following their win over Newport County at the weekend.

The Ammies were 2-1 victors over the side from South Wales courtesy of a Declan Drysdale own goal.

With the result being Salford’s first win of September, as they broke a run of six consecutive defeats to ease themselves away from the relegation zone.

After the game, head coach, Neil Wood reflected on the result: “I wouldn’t say a weight has been lifted.

“It’s nice to win a game, but we have go do it again and that’s what I’ve said to the players. This game is finished we look forward to Tuesday night and next weekend. We have to go and win the next game.”

Salford were able to withstand the strong pressure from the away side towards the later stages with Neil Wood’s side having to hold firm to secure three points.

He added: “It can be difficult against a team that is constantly going out you, going long and putting balls into the box.

“Sometimes it happens where you play well and you don’t win and sometimes you don’t play well and you do win that’s football.”

The Salford head coach was pleased at the defensive team performance from his side, but was wary of the number of times his side gave the ball away in their own half.

As he noted: “[They need to] be better with the ball, not turn it over so many times because it invites pressure, even simple things, giving away simple freekicks.”

And despite the worrying times for the Ammies, one that impressed was 19 year-old Kelly N’Mai, who played on the left hand side, and was unfortunate to not be accredited with Salford’s winning goal.

With the impressive start, Wood mentioned the youngster addition to the squad: “I think we lack that in the squad, we’ve got 7,8 players out injured we lack pace across the top line and agility so its glaringly obvious what we’ve missed and he adds to that.

“He did well considering it was his first start. He brings energy to the side he brings athleticism and he’s very good at dealing with the ball.”

Salford City will play again on Tuesday night with an away trip to Sutton United, who currently sit bottom of League Two, with their being a potential of back to back wins.
