Blue Peter celebrated its 65th Birthday this year in Salford Quays.

The Birthday special aired on Friday October 13 and featured Prince William receiving his green badge, the Earthshot Prize.

With the BBC moving to Salford in 2011, Blue Peter came up to the Dock10 studios at the Quays in MediaCityUk.

And with the studio moving up north, so did the Blue Peter Gardens that can be found in the heart of the Quays.

The show still has a major impact to this day, with the BBC sharing that currently 265,000 children between five and 15 own a badge. The show is very well known across the UK, inspiring children with competitions, letters and ideas for the show.

First airing on this day in 1958, and has inspired thousands if not millions of children throughout this period.

With that in mind, we spoke to the people of Salford asking them their memories of the show.

One keen enthusiast of the show named Mark Lucas, 58, recalled a favourite memory of the show when Helen Skeleton and Barney Harwood arrived in Salford.

Mark went on to say: “When Helen and Barney turned up in the Sea King Helicopter, the first one that they did up here was really good.”

With the show being the longest running children entertainment show in history it really is a testament to the importance of Blue Peter.

And this was highlighted through local Margaret Charles, 75, spoke about the impact that Blue Peter had on her children: “The kids watched from about 1978.

“We used to make bits and pieces from Blue Peter, it was lovely.”
