Salford Men’s Mental Health Commission announced an £18,000 grant for local men’s health charities.

The funding, announced on World Mental Health Day, is part of a wider effort to reduce stigma surrounding men’s mental health, as well as bringing support closer to the community and creating an accessible space for men to talk openly about mental health.

The Salford Men’s Mental Health Commission was established in September 2023.

It is facilitated by Healthwatch Salford and funded by Salford City Council, and organised by charities such as Mandem Meetup, Talk About It Mate and Jamie Horrocks Trust.

Councillor Mishal Saeed, Executive Support Social Care and Mental Health, said: “The Men’s Mental Health Commission has helped us understand the mental health needs of men in our city.

“We hope by providing funding to these local projects, we will be able to make a real positive difference to men’s and women’s mental health in Salford and help prevent mental health issues and suicides.”

Salford City Council also announced a Women’s Mental Health fund, with funding from up to £3,500.

Homelessness charity Emmaus Salford is one of the seven charities that have received part of the £18,000 funding from the Men’s Mental Health Commission.

The charity has shared plans to create a community garden to encourage people to come together, enjoy nature and grow food.

The £2,500 project will transform the outdoor space of the charity’s home in Salford.

Emmaus Salford Project Lead, Victoria Carroll, said: “This project focuses on shared purpose, teamwork, and the benefits of being outdoors.

We will involve men, who are the focus of the funding, in shaping the space, giving them ownership and purpose from the start.

The emphasis will be on connection, activity, and peer support.”

Emmaus Salford offers support and opportunities for up to 27 individuals with experience of homelessness and provides services to the local community.

Work has already begun on the project and is expected to be completed in August next year.
