42’s nightclub has introduced a 10p charge for straws

MANCHESTER nightclub 42’s has introduced a 10p charge for paper straws in a bid to reduce plastic waste.

The club has recently joined the Straw Wars campaign when realising how many waste straws were left on its club floor after a night.

According to Straw Wars, plastic waste makes up between 60 to 80 percent of total marine debris.

Similar to the 5p charge on plastic bags that was brought into action in 2015, there is now an official petition to bring in a 5p charge for plastic straws.

However, 42’s along with 91 other venues across the country has decided to take the matter into its own hands by bringing in limitations on straw usage.

Assistant Manager of 42’s, Ryan Harrison, said: “At the end of the night we used to have straws all over the floor… which we used to think was quite wasteful, it’s not a necessity for customers to have a straw.

“We saw a few videos of animals, especially a turtle with a straw up its nose, which we didn’t think was very nice and didn’t make us feel good about the amount of straws we were throwing away.

“Once a month we will figure out how much profit we’ve made on them [straws] and we will send that all to a charity. It will be a charity to do with either, picking plastic out of the oceans, or helping save specific animals.”

People have also taken to Twitter to voice their opinion with there being a generally positive take on the straw charge, however some people have been left confused by club goers taking their own straws to 42s!

Head of social media, Georgia Rich, added: ‘Everybody’s been pretty positive about it really, but on a night, we’ve got some people who don’t really agree’.
