Salford Cathedral Christmas Fayre launched the festive season in style on Saturday.

The festive fun was enjoyed by people of all ages and many different backgrounds but brought the spirit of the community together perfectly at the cathedral in Chapel Street.

Volunteer Fillipa Martin said: “I’ve been here for eight years, I remember the very first one and it’s great how much it’s grown.”

The fayre featured stalls selling a variety of things, as well as a tombola, hot food, carol singing and even a bouncy castle.

All of the profits for the event go back into supporting the parish so that they can help those that need it most especially in this particularly trying time.

The Salford Cathedral also has set up the ‘Wednesday Club’ which is a club for over 60s that runs every week and contribute’s to the city’s network of warm places to go to ease the cost of living crisis.

The weekly event run by Fillipa Martin consists of playing games, having a bite to eat and coming together to chat for people which may help the consistent problem of more than 1.5 million older people feeling lonelier over Christmas according to Age UK.

The cathedral, which is also the mother Church for the Diocese of Salford, is home to many different nationalities making it an inclusive space for everyone.

In 2020 the former Cathedral Parish and St Joseph’s, Ordsall, formally amalgamated under the new parish name of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Joseph.
