A Salford charity is asking people to join in a five pounds a month donation campaign to combat the increasing demand against poverty and homelessness this coming holidays.

Charity, Mustard Tree, is encouraging residents to support the campaign after the cost of living crisis has left the organisation stretched for resources.

Jo Walby, Mustard Tree CEO, said: “We are entering a crucial time for our charity.

“We’re supporting more people now than at the height of the pandemic, with an unprecedented upsurge in people who are struggling to make ends meet.”

Mustard Tree, based in Little Hulton and Eccles, is starting its ‘High Fivers’ campaign, which calls for residents to give five pounds a month to help fund the charity’s core services, from training resources to items for its food clubs, this amidst a significant rise in demand for its services.

The campaign claims that its aim is not to secure large monetary donations from individuals during a time where most of us are feeling the pinch, but to create a movement for change in which people can a desired amount to help those less fortunate.

Harry Dwan, Fundraising and Advocacy Lead said: “We need to think differently about how Greater Manchester residents can help us combat poverty but also future proof the charity.

“Joining the High Fivers campaign by giving five pounds a month can make all the difference to someone facing hardship or crisis.”

“We’re asking people to be part of something. If you believe in what we do and our approach to combating poverty – please support us now as we can’t do this alone”.

The ask comes amid pressures on many third sector organisations, which are feeling the impact of the economic downturn more immediately, both in income and demand on services.

According to the Civil Society, the cost-of-living crisis has prompted one in seven (14%) people to say they will cut back on charitable donations to help manage their bills.

The campaign launch coincides with ‘Giving Tuesday’ the global giving day celebrated on the Tuesday following the well-known shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Donations can be made through Mustard Tree’s website.
