Free nature walks around local parks in Salford, led by nature and wildlife expert David Winnard, are being offered by the Salford Rangers Team.

These informative and entertaining walks range from locations such as Peel Park, the Kersal Wetlands, and the Worsley Woods.

Mr Winnard has an impressive and extensive knowledge on all things nature, and he thinks that people would be surprised by the flora and fauna you are able to find in Salford.

Mr Winnard said: “We often kind of turn our noses up, why would you want to go to an urban park? Over the years, the more I’ve done these kind of events, the more you go, why wouldn’t you?

“We’ve got trees from all sorts of places, the species that utilize that, that that you’ll never find in an ancient oak woodland.

“I can go to remote areas and take groups out into the middle of Wales and things like that and show them stuff. Then I can show them just as much amazing species in the middle of Salford as well.”

There is no set structure to these walks, its different every time as Mr Winnard says he reacts to what he sees.

Mr Winnard said: “You’ve just got to react to what’s happening around you. You can have an idea about what you’re going to be doing.

“But there’ll always be someone who will ask a question that’ll lead to you showing them something else that you just totally didn’t have a plan for.

“That’s the beauty with wildlife is that you can’t plan it because it never works like clockwork.”

Mr Winnard believes that you do not have to go to the middle of a forest or the Amazon to find a multitude of species.

In his small garden at home, he claims to have been able to record over 1000 different species.

Mr Winnard continued: “It’s the same thing in Salford. I guarantee if we went down to some of the houses, even in the urban parts of Salford, and found a terraced house, over the course of a few years, we could record a thousand species.

“That’s my job in life, is to try and make people realise these things are on their doorstep and they need our protection.”
