Salford City narrowly lost late on against League One outfit Bolton Wanderers in a preseason friendly.

A Callum Hendry strike was cancelled out by goals from George Thomason and Aaron Morley.

Salford named a strong squad, albeit with only one centre back in the squad in Theo Vassell.

The EFL Trophy winners came out of the gates fast, troubling the Salford backline with Luke Garbutt becoming a makeshift center back.

Two goal line clearances in quick succession from Vassell kept the Ammies in the contest in the first half.

The attack slowly started to click, with Callum Hendry glancing a header that was easily claimed by Wanderers keeper Joel Coleman.

But nothing came from the positive spell, and the game went into the break goalless.

Half time brought some relief for Salford, who started the second half brightest.

Callum Hendry opened the scoring in the 50th minute, dribbling through the Bolton defence and slotting it past Coleman.

The game then went into a quiet phase, with little chances being created by both sides, and plenty of subsitutions.

But the League One side pushed onwards as the full time whistle loomed, winning a corner, which was played short into the feet of George Thomason, who drove his effort from the edge of the box and deflected in.

Luke Garbutt then came off the pitch, putting Salford down to ten men, and the Trotters besieged the Ammies box.

The Trotters grabbed the winner late on, a scramble in the box coming into the feet of Aaron Morley who drove it home in front of the travelling fans.

Despite the loss, the Ammies played valiantly and created many issues for the visiting side.

Salford next play away at AFC Fylde before their League Two season opener away at Forest Green Rovers.
