This Christmas, some may argue that finding affordable things to do during the festive period is more important than ever.

Here is a top five list of festive activities in Salford for free.

Over the Christmas holidays, The Lowry hosts many family fun events and free exhibits that are available all year round and during the festive season.

A special exhibit of Julia and Axel’s artwork is being displayed until January 1 at The Lowry. The exhibit displays the creative magic behind some of the biggest children’s stories. You can also book free festive “Crafty Families” sessions from December 9-30 every Saturday on their website.

With a different creative activity every week, individuals and families are welcome to join in. Salford residents can also receive discounted and free tickets to the Lowry Gallery. You can apply for these on their website

Two: Salford Museum and Art Gallery

It’s also free to visit the Salford Museum and Art Gallery.

They are open every Tuesday-Sunday and have a large variety of exhibitions on display. Special displays from local Salford artists including Andrew Alan Matthews and Leah Higgins are available throughout the festive season.

Furthermore, on December 17, Music and Performing Arts Salford (MAPAS) is performing a free concert throughout the day. You can enjoy the carols as you browse the gallery or sit down and sing along to some Christmas classics. You can also use the museum’s Local History Library free of charge, which holds a large collection of pictures, documents and newspapers from Salford’s past.

Visit their website to pre-book sessions at the library and find out more information about the exhibits.

Ordsall Hall is open until December 21 and reopens on January 2.

The hall offers a variety of activities such as dressing up as a Tudor, learning more about the notable people who lived there and discovering the food that was cooked in the kitchens during the 1500’s.

On Sundays between 2-2:45 pm, free tours are hosted by volunteers, giving visitors a special insight into the hall’s history.

You don’t have to book to visit, but more information can be found on their website.

Four: Christingle Celebration
