Salford City’s winless run extended to 11 games following a 3-0 loss to Accrington Stanley.

Having lost the last three games in a row by a combined 2-10 score, Salford would have hoped for a response under interim coach Simon Wiles at the Wham Stadium.

There were two changes from the side that were beaten by Grimsby Town, with Conor McAleny and Junior Luamba coming into the side.

Salford did get off to a positive start, with Ryan Watson’s long-range effort going wide of the Stanley net.

Shaun Whalley got the home side off the mark on 14 minutes, volleying in from close range following a corner.

The Ammies’ afternoon became more difficult after Luke Bolton fouled Joe Pritchard in his penalty area, with Jack Nolan finishing the resulting kick in the top left corner.

Accrington finished a strong first half with a third on 41 minutes, with Whalley getting his second of the game.

Salford did come out fighting in the second half of the game, controlling much of the possession throughout.

Ultimately they were not able to break through Accrington’s back line, best highlighted by a series of Matt Smith headers that were blocked and saved towards the final whistle.

Salford end New Year’s Day in 21st place, five points off the relegation places ahead of the visit of bottom-placed Forest Green Rovers on the 6th of January.
