Salford City picked up a win in their first EFL Trophy clash of the season against Liverpool U-21’s tonight.

The hosts went into this game fourth in League Two after four wins in six games, their best ever start to a campaign in League Two. However, Liverpool U-21’s have had a mixed start to the season in Premier League Two, having won just one of their first four matches.

Salford fielded a rotated side, making six changes from their 1-0 win against Stevenage on Saturday. Josh O’Brien, Adam Porter and Jack Jenkins were also handed their debuts.

The Ammies created a lack of significant chances in the first half but took the lead on the stroke of half time, when Kevin Berkoe scored his first goal for the club thanks to some magic down the right wing from Elliot Simões.

Debutant Jenkins then doubled the lead in the 59th minute with a calm finish after Liverpool were dispossessed in midfield. Layton Stewart gave the visitors a lifeline in the 88th minute, but the hosts survived the late scare.

Simões impressed in his first start for the club, looking lively throughout and contributing with his assist. Jenkins was also awarded man of the match after a strong outing in his debut.

Salford next face Crawley on Saturday in their third home game in a row, where they will be hoping to continue their fine form.
