Salford City’s Friday night EFL League Two fixture against Colchester United has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Freezing temperatures and snow amid weather warnings earlier this week meant that the pitch at the Peninsula Stadium is too hard for football to be safely played on the surface.

The Ammies had covered the field in a layer to protect the pitch, with a statement on Tuesday saying: “The ground staff have started to take preventative measures over the last couple of days, including laying frost covers which can help to protect the playing surface, but aren’t designed to stop the ground from freezing.”

The club provided an update today, announcing the delay. It said: “A pitch inspection was held on Thursday morning by a match official, and with temperatures not due to increase significantly before the game they recommended a postponement.

“Both clubs will now liaise with the EFL and arrange a new date for the fixture.

“Supporters who had purchased match tickets should keep hold of these because they will be valid for the re-arranged fixture. Once a new date has been decided, if you can no longer make it to the game then you will be able to claim a refund from your point of purchase.”

Colchester United fans would have faced a 9-hour round trip between the two stadiums should the fixture have gone ahead, being one of the longest away trips for U’s fans this season.

Both sides are struggling at the bottom of League Two this season, sat in 21st and 22nd place. The two sides played each other in December, with the Essex club running out 2-1 winners at the Jobserve Community Stadium.

Salford’s next game will be an away visit to Bradford City, taking place on Tuesday night, with kick off at Valley Parade at 7:45pm.
