Salford City’s decision to reduce ticket prices to the levels they would have been 100 years ago for their upcoming game against Gillingham has resulted in a sell-out.

The club slashed ticket prices to just £1.40 per person for home and away supporters, reflecting the amount it would have cost fans to watch a game in 1926, the year King George V granted Salford city status.

The decision to cut admission for the match comes ahead of the city celebrating its 100th birthday on Tuesday, 21 April, with the game being the last Ammies’ home fixture before the big day.

Home supporters from the city and travelling fans from Kent have wasted no time in snapping up the cheap tickets to ensure the Peninsula Stadium will be packed to the rafters for an important game in the League Two promotion race.

More than 5,100 fans are expected to attend the game against Gillingham on Saturday which means Salford will comfortably surpass their 4,011 attendance record this season.

Speaking about the initiative, Martin Ingham-Griffith, Chief Executive Officer at Foundation 92 said: “This is a huge milestone for the City of Salford and as a Club and a Foundation we are all excited to be part of it by running this offer.

“We put our community at the forefront of everything that we do throughout the Club and the Foundation, and this is an opportunity for us all to support one another and celebrate together at this hugely exciting time for Salford both around the City and at the football club.

“Becoming a City for the first time was an historic moment for Salford, and there would be no better way of celebrating that than with an exciting end to the season, with lots to play for.”

Salford City sit sixth in League Two, three points off the automatic promotion places.

A win against Gillingham in front of a capacity crowd would see the side cut the gap to their promotion rivals with Cambridge United and Notts County set to play each other this weekend.

It would also consolidate their position in the play-offs, a year after Karl Robinson’s men agonisingly missed out on a top-seven finish after a draw on the final day of the season.

Promotion-chasing Salford City welcome Gillingham to a sold-out Peninsula Stadium on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.
